She Didn’t Hide. She Owned It.
While we were in Rarotonga doing a photoshoot, something happened that I can’t stop thinking about.
The lagoon was glowing. The sand was warm. And our beautiful Pearl Queen, Veronica — a mum of four — was about to step in front of the camera in a bikini and her pearls.
And if I’m honest? At first, she was shy.
Not dramatic. Not insecure. Just that quiet hesitation so many of us carry. The subtle adjusting. The small shift of the shoulders. The checking of angles. Four pregnancies. Four recoveries. Four chapters written into her body. And like so many women over 40, she wasn’t sure if her body was “ready” to be seen like that.
We started talking. About how our bodies change. About how motherhood reshapes you. About how society makes women feel like they’re supposed to rewind back to 25.
And then I said something to her that changed the energy completely.
I told her: “You know you’re empowering other Pearl Queens right now, right? You sitting here — exactly as you are — is giving other women permission to love their bodies too.”
Something shifted.
Her posture changed. Her smile softened. Her energy lifted.
She wasn’t posing anymore. She was owning.
Pearls are formed through pressure. Irritation. Time. Layers. They don’t become beautiful despite what they’ve been through. They become beautiful because of it.
Our Pearl Queens aren’t 20-year-old models with untouched skin. They are women who have lived.
Women who have raised families. Built businesses. Carried grief. Carried strength.
When Veronica sat confidently in that bikini wearing her pearls, it wasn’t about the bikini. It was about ownership. About reframing the story. About understanding that your body is not something to “fix.” It is proof. Proof of life. Proof of resilience. Proof of depth.
And when you wear SJ, it’s not about hiding. It’s about honouring. Honouring the journey. Honouring the pressure. Honouring the woman you’ve become.
With love from Raro,
Sha x
