ARE TAHITIAN PEARLS ACTUALLY BLACK?
When discussing the color of Tahitian pearls the term "black" is used to describe pearls with dark body colors. The only black thing about Tahitian pearls are the black lipped oyster (Pinctada Magaritifera) that they are grown in. It could be silver, brown, blue, green, purple or a mixture - but never a true black.
Tahitian pearls can display an amazing range of overtones (especially the circle and baroque shapes).
This is why I tend to personally wear more of these shapes. Tahitian pearls will have a dark green body color and peacock (think oil slick) overtones are usually the most expensive.
