Alu'alu Puialofa Necklace

You don’t need to announce yourself. People feel it when you walk in, and this pearl necklace works the same way.

The Alu’alu Puialofa Necklace is inspired by the alualu, the jellyfish within the sacred malu, the design traditionally tattooed behind the knees of Samoan women as a mark of protection and strength. The motifs are there but subtle, almost hidden, like something just for you. At the centre sits a 9mm Tahitian pearl, and each one carries its own markings, so yours won’t be quite like anyone else’s.

Wear it to work with a plain black top, to church on Sunday, or out for coffee when you’d rather be noticed slowly. Choose 50cm to sit closer to the neck, or 60cm to fall a little lower over a shirt or dress. It also layers well with a chain you already own.

STEP ONE

Keep them gunk-free. Cosmetics, sunblock, perfume and hairspray can dramatically dull the lustre, as can your body oils and perspiration. 

Chemicals such as bleach, sulphur and detergents can also erode the gems, leaving them dull.

STEP TWO

Avoid wearing jewellery while swimming (chlorine, fresh or saltwater) or activities involving water.

STEP THREE

Avoid cleaning agents and regularly wipe with a soft, damp cloth after wearing. 

If need be, use clean warm water with a cloth and make sure the metals are dried out afterwards.

STEP FOUR

Store correctly. Get into the habit of storing your jewellery correctly will ensure that it has a long life. 

Keep your jewellery in a soft pouch or soft lined jewellery box.
